Fall Browns..gettin’ down and dirty!

Three friends and I took a road trip earlier this fall to a river that I’d heard has a huge population of brown trout. What better time to check it out than in the fall when the browns are getting ready to spawn. This time of year the browns are very unforgiving of a streamer passing through their personal space…. and if you’re not above throwing an egg pattern (which I am not) they will move up to three or four feet to grab it. The road trip turned out to be well worth it. Between the four of us we landed well over 100 browns and rainbows. Interestingly enough the biggest fish of the day were three feisty rainbows, sitting back in the deep water behind brown trout redds. For those of you who believe it’s best to leave the browns alone during the spawn… well, I can totally appreciate that. If you do make it out to target browns in the Fall, please be very mindful of where you walk..to avoid stepping on redds. Try crossing the river in deeper water that is less likely to have spawning activity in it.
