(An Artist’s Insight) What’s in a Brush?
What’s in a brush? You can get like a ten pack of brushes for $6 from dickblick.com. So why would anyone in their right mind go out and spent $20-$50 on a paint brush? Being a Dutchman myself, I started out buying the cheapest brushes that I could get away with. Not only that, I bought as few of brushes as possible. I guess that I figured I’d spend the money I saved on brushes on fun things like fly rods and such. But the fact of the matter is that you’d have a far easier time fly fishing with a $30 rod and reel combo, then painting with bottom of the barrel paint brushes. I’ve come to trust my mongoose and sable brushes like a surgeon trusts his state of the art tools. I love the fluidity with which a mongoose brush lays paint on canvas. It holds about twice as much paint as a synthetic or less expensive brush, so I spend far less time reloading the brush with paint. I guess the only down side to using expensive brushes is when I forget to clean them and throw $150 down the drain…
